cell phones

I understand that some students keep cell phones in their backpacks. It's proven by how many times they have gone off during class :)Therefore, I am asking that students leave cell phones at home during our testing window so there is not chance of them going off during test time. If this is not possible, please make sure that the phones are turned OFF before your child leaves home in the mornings. Your help with this matter is GREATLY appreciated.

Important News!

Please turn in the following things tomorrow:

Notes of Encouragement: A couple of weeks ago, I sent home envelopes with each student that contained 5 note cards for you to complete to encourage your child during KPREP testing.  I have only received a handful of those back.  I need those turned in tomorrow.  These cards will be passed out each morning before testing to motivate and encourage your child to work hard.

Good Faith Effort Contracts were sent home Monday. This must be turned in tomorrow.  The family contract stays home, but the student contract comes back to me.

We need donations of individually wrapped snacks and drinks for testing.  We need enough for each child to have one each of the 5 days of testing.  We have 25 students in our class.  I simply can not afford to provide snacks and drinks every day for every student.  Currently, I have had only 1 family donate. That donation is greatly appreciated.

Students should wear their KPREP T-Shirts tomorrow.  Students will also wear these shirts on May 10 and May 16.

If your child is missing grades for a teacher, those are due tomorrow!  Teachers must have all grades posted by 3PM Friday.  Missing grades will be given a grade of 0% F.

Mark your calendars for these important dates:

5/10   KPREP Testing Begins (wear your shirt)
5/16   Last day of KPREP testing (wear your shirt)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

We have just finished reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  Students had many questions about the inferences they were to make throughout the book.  Discussions have been great. I encourage you to continue the talk with them at home.

Malala Writing Assignment

Below are the instructions for the Malala Writing Assignment. We began this work in class, but students need to finish at home.  This assignment is due on or before Friday, April 21.

Select one of the following writing tasks to complete.  Be sure to use the general scoring guide to help you as you complete the task. Don’t forget to use prewriting activities before you write your draft.

1. HUMAN RIGHTS – Should education be a basic human right?  Write a speech to our world leaders to express your opinion.  Be sure to include your reasons for your opinion.

2. PARENTING – Was Malala’s dad a bad parent?  Write a blog post that explains whether or not you think Malala’s dad was a bad parent.  Be sure to use specific evidence from the book to support your answer.

3. FAITH – Even through her struggles, Malala remained true to her faith.  Would you (could you) remain faithful to your faith group/religion if they gave you the same restrictions that Malala faced?  Write an article for your school newspaper describing your beliefs about equal rights and how they compare with your faith group/religion.  Include how you would react to your group if you were in Malala’s situation.

4. LINCOLN LEADERS -  Malala wanted an education more than anything and nothing was going to keep her from it.  What can you do to encourage your classmates to take pride in their education?  Write an action plan that you could present to the principal that would encourage students to come to school and work hard. Be sure to include the following in your plan: purpose of the plan, school attendance, behavior, and grades (keep in mind that not everyone will always be a straight A student).

If you do not understand the assignment, ask NOW. Do not wait until Friday. Use the chart below to guide you.
