Scholastic Book Orders

This year, we will be ordering books from Scholastic. This gives you the opportunity to by some great books for your child at incredible prices.

Each time you order, our class is awarded BONUS POINTS.  I use these bonus points to order books for our classroom library and other materials used by the students in class.

You have the option of ordering online (which is easy - and my favorite way), or you can send me your order and I will order it for you.  If you send me your order, you MUST write a check payable to SCHOLASTIC.  I will not accept cash.

To check out the great books offered by Scholastic, go ahead and click HERE to get to our classroom page.

Thank you for supporting our class by ordering....

FYI - We will be doing a reading challenge in September. Those books are available through the book order.  More info to come on the challenge.

Super Hero Math

TASK:  Using what we've learned about the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY, IDENTITY PROPERTY, ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY, AND COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY, create a superhero for each property.

Draw a picture of the superhero.

Give a slogan or quote from the superhero that shows your understanding of the property.

Write an example of the property.

Use my superheroes to help you out.

Comparing Characters

We read about how Ben gave into the peer pressure from Kevin, and then we read about a special artist named Roberto.  They both acted/behaved a certain way at the beginning of their stories.

Did Ben or Roberto change? If so, HOW????

How are Ben and Roberto the same?

How are Ben and Roberto different?

We are learning more about the ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY OF addition and multiplication, the COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY of addition and multiplication, and the IDENTITY PROPERTY of addition and multiplication.

Next, we will be moving on the the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY.

For a review (and to get a head start for tomorrow), click HERE to learn more and do some practice problems.  When you finish, I'd love for you to come back and leave a comment letting me know what you learned or what you think you need more practice with.

Figurative Language

Good evening! I apologize for not getting a post up sooner.  Please forgive me.

Today we talked more about figurative language by watching the videos from the previous posts and listening to the song "Barbed Wire and Roses."

For 5 points of extra credit, leave a comment telling about a simile or metaphor (or other type of figurative language) from a song you've heard recently or from a book you've been reading.

You need to include the TITLE of where the figurative language came from, the EXAMPLE, and what you think it MEANS.

Remember, this is EXTRA CREDIT, not required.  If you get it wrong, at least you tried; it doesn't count against you.

This is DUE BY THURSDAY.

How Bad Could It Be?

Now that we've read the story, How Bad Could It Be?, think about what you can do to stop a bully.

Can you stand up to the bully by confronting him/her?

Can you be friends with the person being bullied and encourage others to join in the friendship?

What are your thoughts??

Favorite Fiction

When I was a kid, I loved the Ramona Quimby books. What is your favorite FICTION book?

Welcome Back to School

Open House will be held on Monday, August 10 at 5:00.  I look forward to meeting my fifth graders that night.  You will also have the chance to meet Miss Wilson, our student teacher. She will be with us for several weeks before going to SES and then finishing up overseas!  I am excited to have her co-teaching with me until then.

See you soon!
