Malala Writing Assignment

Below are the instructions for the Malala Writing Assignment. We began this work in class, but students need to finish at home.  This assignment is due on or before Friday, April 21.

Select one of the following writing tasks to complete.  Be sure to use the general scoring guide to help you as you complete the task. Don’t forget to use prewriting activities before you write your draft.

1. HUMAN RIGHTS – Should education be a basic human right?  Write a speech to our world leaders to express your opinion.  Be sure to include your reasons for your opinion.

2. PARENTING – Was Malala’s dad a bad parent?  Write a blog post that explains whether or not you think Malala’s dad was a bad parent.  Be sure to use specific evidence from the book to support your answer.

3. FAITH – Even through her struggles, Malala remained true to her faith.  Would you (could you) remain faithful to your faith group/religion if they gave you the same restrictions that Malala faced?  Write an article for your school newspaper describing your beliefs about equal rights and how they compare with your faith group/religion.  Include how you would react to your group if you were in Malala’s situation.

4. LINCOLN LEADERS -  Malala wanted an education more than anything and nothing was going to keep her from it.  What can you do to encourage your classmates to take pride in their education?  Write an action plan that you could present to the principal that would encourage students to come to school and work hard. Be sure to include the following in your plan: purpose of the plan, school attendance, behavior, and grades (keep in mind that not everyone will always be a straight A student).

If you do not understand the assignment, ask NOW. Do not wait until Friday. Use the chart below to guide you.

Expectations
Students are expected (and have at least 10-15 minutes) to go to the restroom every morning during homeroom.  Many students are waiting to go during their first class.  This has been the expectation since August.

Homework should be completed at home. Very little is given, yet many students are scrambling to get it done during homeroom each morning.  Students have 10- 30 minutes every afternoon before their bells ring to gather materials to go home and to begin work on homework.

Disrespect has become a major issue. Mrs. Pais announced that students who show disrespect will be sent to the office. Many students are rolling their eyes, backtalking, and throwing their behavior sheets at their teachers.

If your child is sick, they can NOT come back to school until they are 24 hours fever free.  Please do not give your child Tylenol/Motrin to bring down the temp so he/she can come to school.  Strep and Flu are still going around.

Five Minute Friday Post 2: Control

This Five Minute Friday post is from Maddie in Ms. Knipp's homeroom. Maddie is new to our school, and this is her first experience with Five Minute Friday.

When I hear the word control I automatically think of someone who has power. Take a teacher for instance a teacher has control over her students. Also, if you are the controller of a robot you have control over what the robot does and how it moves.  Also, the president has control over our country like Donald Trump, right now. When you think of control you should also think of yourself because you have control over what you do and you have control of your learning. What I mean by you have control over what you do and what you don't do for yourself to extend your knowledge. Also, that controls your grades and your homework. Your parents have control over things about you like your bedtime, your chores, and what you do. when you don't use your control it makes you seem powerless and like you have never heard that you have control of yourself and that people are just trying to help you out with you self control. Control means that you have power over something. You should use your control of things like your learning because in the end your control opens your world to a whole new world of possibilities.

Five Minute Friday: Control

It has been a while since our writing classes have participated in Five Minute Friday.  They were excited to get back to it today.

This post was written by Jayden.....

I have control over myself. I can keep myself  from going out of control. Have you ever had that feeling when you know that you cant control it anymore and you just have to let it all out, let it be free. I've had that feeling before and its not good. It makes you feel like you've done something bad. I'm
stop
not like that, I don't like being bad or out of control. I don't know anyone who would want to. It's not right to be bad.
